Sharon Springs, Kansas to Wild Horse, Colorado 9-05-06 US40W
September 5, 2006 west bound on US 40 west. We dropped off I70w at Oakley, Kansas to enjoy the quiet drive of the original highway 40. We would rejoin Interstate 70 some 200 miles west at Limon, Colorado. A beautiful drive. The first exposure was taken shortly after sunrise at the railyard at Sharon Springs, Kansas with two westbounds holding for crews. Sharon Springs is a layover town for Union Pacific crews. We spent the night there as well. The last image at Wild Horse, Colorado 70 miles later. Over 300 images were taken on this drive with light changing from low overcast, fog, then scattered low clouds. Fuji S1Pro 70-300mm, auto exposure, manual or aperture priority, manual focus, hand held or tripod. There was very little traffic; several stops were made. And again, the narrow horizontal layout is forced, in some part, by those power lines along the side of the highway. Unless these structures add something to the image - and some times they do! - the lines are cropped. The other part in this narrow space is the enhancing of the elegant horizontals of the edges cast along the swells of the prairie by cloud shawdows or corn fields. Whew! Terrific stuff.
